DescriptionGroup portrait of Willie Poweshiek, John H. Hauberg and Jim Poweshiek during Hauberg's adoption into the Bear Clan of the Meskwaki (Fox) tribe. The ceremony is taking place at the Black Hawk Watch Tower on the Black Hawk Historic Site in Black Hawk State Park in Rock Island, Illinois. Other individuals are visible in the foreground and background. The Poweshieks and some of the other Meskwaki are wearing feathered headdresses and other regalia. John Hauberg is wearing a suit and tie as well as a roach headdress.

They braided his scalplock[?]...had him smoke a pipe blowing smoke in 4 directions and all Indians present filed past and shook hands with him."

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9600XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 1200ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the shadows from 0 to 100, the midtones from 1.00 to 1.13 and the highlights from 255 to 246 using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
