DescriptionGroup portrait of a boy and young girl of the Meskwaki (Fox) tribe. They are standing outside a wickiup, or dwelling constructed of reed mats and timber. The boy is wearing a collared shirt, overalls, and what appears to be a woven cap. The girl is wearing a ribbon shirt and long skirt. The boy is standing slighty behind the girl, and appears to be helping to steady her by holding her left hand in his left hand. This photograph was taken at the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama, Iowa.

NotesIn "Tama Indians - Black Hawk Prairie Club Big Hike 1921" album, gifted to John H. Hauberg by members of the the Black Hawk Prairie Club on November 22, 1921 in honor of his birthday. The cover of the album appears in this archive as image number 27_BHPC_1921_0. This photograph appears on page 79 of the album. On page 55 of the album, the Pow Wow is described as follows: "Indian Pow-Wow - August 16th to 21st, 1922 - Tama, Iowa. 'The entire Mesquakie Tribe and their visiting friends from tribes in Nebraska, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and elsewhere enjoy their tribal "Thanksgiving" festivities in accordance with the favor of Providence in giving to them abundant crops and freedom from pestilence.'"

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital Image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a print photograph scanned at 24-bit RGB color 1200ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of shadows from 0 to 30, the midtones from 1.00 to .93, and the highlights from 255 to 243 using Adobe PhotoShop 7.0.
