DescriptionPortrait of John J. Mitchell, a man of the Meskwaki (Fox) tribe, taken during the celebration of the Fort Armstrong Centennial at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. He is wearing a feathered headdress, what may be a sash or bandolier bag over his right shoulder, and armbands decorated with what might be either beadwork or embroidery. He is carrying a blanket over his left arm. He is standing beneath a tree along the banks of a body of water and is looking out across the water. The water may be the Mississippi River.

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9600XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a lantern slide scanned at 24-bit RGB color 1200ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the midtones from 1.00 to 1.20, and by adjusting brightness +20 and contrast +12 using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
