They are attending the Illinois Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, held in Galesburg, Illinois on Augusts 29, 1882. Some of the men are wearing clerical collars and suits and the rest are in suits and ties. Some of the men have canes and there is a small bag on the sidewalk in front of the fifth man from the left. |

| Notes | Note on back of photograph : "A rare picture of the history of prairie land black people. Found in the debris of a building being wrecked in Galesburg, this picture shows a group of Negro clergymen at a meeting almost a century ago. (Courtesy of Harold Allen)." There is some glaring around the edges of the photo and smudges underneath the photograph in the caption area. Photographer's name and address were verified in the 1882 Galesburg City Directory. The church and address could not be verified. |

TIFF file created from a print photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 600 ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the contrast from 0 to +25 and the brightness from 0 to +10 using Adobe Photoshop CS. |
