DescriptionImage shows a large group of men in uniforms, most likely volunteer firemen with Galesburg's first fire equipment. The men are standing near the south side of the public square. Photograph is looking north. There are other men and boys in the background. Image also includes a view of the Bartlett and Judson store with signs showing the items sold there. The streets are unpaved and there is a chimney showing in the background which may be from the Knowles Millls company. Caption of back of photo "Galesburg first fire engine hand pumper, s. side public sqaure. We have many valuable jewels not yet unearthed in this collection. I call it priceless collection but the (?) people in store call scrap this. I believe is the Knowles Mill chimney and gone many a year ago we have a negative of this as it is and is a priceless pioneer of old Galesburg."

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9600XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a photographic print scanned at 8-bit grayscale 600ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the shadows from 0 to 11, the midtones from 1.00 to 1.09 and the highlights from 255 to 234, and by adjusting contrast +5 using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
