DescriptionPhotograph shows the Fourth Ward School in Galesburg, Illinois, and it's students and teachers. There are a large number of young boys sitting on a wooden sidewalk in front of the school with a wooden fence behind them. Most of the girls are standing on the walkways leading to the school. There are also some children and teachers looking out of windows. The building is a large brick structure with a cupola on the roof.

NotesWritten on the front border of the photograph is "Galesburg School. Erected 1870. Cost $13, 000. Four school rooms. Fourth Ward". On the back is written "Knox County, Illinois, Galesburg Fourth Ward School. Erected 1870. Cost complete $13, 000. Four school rooms. 280 seats. Miss Sara Petee principal". "1876" was written in ink on a the right portion of the photo. Written in the same manner on the left side of the photo is (ph)"oto by McMillen". Stamped on the back of the photo is "Z.P. McMillen, Photographer, Nos. 12 and 14 East Main Street, Galesburg Ill."

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9600XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a photographic print scanned at 8-bit grayscale 600ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the shadows from 0 to 46, the midtones from 1.00 to.71 and the highlights from 255 to 229 using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
