DescriptionPhotograph shows a submarine on a truck on East Main Street in Galesburg, Illinois. There is a large crowd gathered around the submarine on the street and sidewalks. There is a ladder leading up to the vessel and there are some men on the landing. Several stores in downtown Galesburg can be seen in the photograph.

NotesWritten on the front of the photograph, "Aug. 21, 43. Two man sub. Galesburg, Ills. #5." In a newspaper article written on August 23, 1943 in the Galesburg Daily Register-Mail newspaper it was reported that the vessel was a captured Japanese submarine touring the country to encourage the buying of War bonds and stamps. The total purchased in Galesburg was over $6, 000 and in Knoxville, Illinois the sale totaled over $3, 100. Addresses verified in the 1943 Galesburg City Directory.

Object Description1 photograph : b&w ; 3.5 x 5.75 in.
Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using an Epson Expression 1680 scanner with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a print photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 1200ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the contrast from 0 to +5 and the brightness from 0 to +12 using Adobe PhotoShop CS.
