DescriptionPhotograph shows a large group of men who have either enlisted or were drafted into the United States Army to serve during World War I. They are sitting on what appear to be bleachers between the Galesburg City Hall and the First Baptist Church. Most are wearing suits and ties and one man has a suitcase. There is a large U. S. flag at the back of the group.

NotesWritten on the photograph, "Sammies, Knox Co. June 24 '18." United States soldiers were often called Sammies by French soldiers probably because of "Uncle Sam." Source: French Embassy website: www.ambafrance-us.org/franceus/history. Address verified in the 1916 Galesburg City Directory. The photographer's address could not be found. There are some small dark spots on the lower left of the photograph.

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using an Epson Expression 1680 scanner with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a print photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 1200ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the contrast from 0 to +22 using Adobe PhotoShop CS.
