DescriptionPhotograph shows a large crowd standing in the middle of East Main Street and on the sidewalks from the area on the east side of the Public Square into the distance. They are waiting for the parade celebrating the premiere of the motion picture Those Were the Days that was filmed in Galesburg. There are flags hanging from the lamp posts and some people hanging out of the windows. There are street vendors under tents set up along the street and in the far distance on the right is a Ferris wheel and a merry-go-round. Many business signs can be seen on the buildings.

NotesOutdoor scenes for the motion picture Those Were the Days was filmed in Galesburg by Paramount Pictures. It starred William Holden who came to Galesburg for the premiere and stayed at the Hotel Custer. It was based on the book Those Were the Days at Old Siwash, written by Geoge Fitch, a Knox College alumnus. Written in ink on the back of the photograph: Waiting for the parade, May 21, 1940, Those Were the Days, Knox Movie. This photograph was loaned to the Galesburg Public Library so that it could be scanned and saved to CD-ROM disc and added to this web-site.

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using an Epson Expression 1680 scanner with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a print photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 600ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the contrast from 0 to +26 and the brightness from 0 to +26 using Adobe PhotoShop CS.
