| Notes | The original negative envelope is labeled N. D. Ely. City directories and census records indicate this may be Nathan D. Ely (1865-1941), a lawyer who was living in Davenport from about 1895 until 1917. The Army Appropriations Act of 1912 created the Regular Army Reserve, and documentation proves Ely served in the Judge Advocate General's department during World War I. Ely grew up in Johnson County, Iowa and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1895, then served during the Spanish-American War as a seaman in the Navy. He married twice and had three children. His eldest son was Eugene B. Ely, first aviator to take off and land an airplane on a ship. Nathan Dana Ely spent his retirement years in Washington, D.C. and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. |
