The monument was erected as a memorial to Lieutenant John Campbell and his men who fought in a battle against Chief Black Hawk and his men during the War of 1812 on July 19, 1814. A row of cannons are visible to the left of the monument.

Digital Reproduction InformationDigital image captured using a Microtek ScanMaker 9600XL with transparent media adapter. TIFF file created from a photograph scanned at 8-bit grayscale 600ppi. The master scan is untouched, but this display image was enhanced by adjusting the input level of the shadows from 0 to 10 and the highlights from 255 to 245 using Adobe PhotoShop 7.0.
