|Description||This group portrait shows fifteen people in the interior of a home. The background shows two patterns of wallpaper, a framed portrait on the wall, a calendar, carpet on the floor and curtain at a window. Members of the group are seated on chairs and stools and a row stands behind them. Seated in the front row are the eldest man and woman of the group. He has a beard. She has her hands folded in her lap. They are surrounded by young boys and girls. The row behind is mainly adult males and females. The young man on the far left appears younger than the rest. The man third from the right has a mustache and is holding a very young child in his arms. The men and boys are dressed in dark suits with white shirts and dark ties. The women are wearing a variety of clothing styles, some with blouses and skirts, some formal dress. Two of the young boys are wearing shorts or knickers. The young girls have dresses with detailed bodices. The length of the skirts varies. Shoes can be seen in the first row. The young girl standing on the elderly woman's right is wearing eyeglasses. |

|Notes||The original negative envelope is labeled "L. W. McKowen". Based on information in the Davenport city directory, census information from 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910, the 1905 Atlas of Scott County, Iowa and a newspaper obituary from the Davenport Democrat it seems likely the elderly couple pictured is George W. and Elizabeth Jane (Smiley) Leamer. Their three adult children are Bertha "Bertie" Leamer McKown, wife of Louis W. McKown; Emma Leamer Ried/Reid, widow of George Ried/Reid; William A. Leamer and wife Annie. George W. Leamer's obituary states he is survived by eight grandchildren, and there are eight children in this image. They are likely Ethel J., Eugene and Russell L. McKown and Herbert, Lillian, Mildred, Cecil and Duane Delbert Leamer. Duane Delbert Leamer's birth year is listed in the 1900 census as April 1897. Using a perpetual calendar it was determined the calendar on the wall could be 1897, 1904 or 1909. The image may have been taken at 734 East 14th Street in Davenport, the home address of George W. Leamer during these years. The McKown family resided at 1608 Park Avenue, Davenport from 1902-1907. They are listed as living at 2425 Brady Street in the 1909 Davenport city directory. The William A. Leamer family lived on the original family farm in LeClaire Township, Scott County. |
